KOHLRABI
Such a fun looking crop that tastes fantastic
when grated raw on salads or gently steamed
Where to grow
They like fertile well drained soil
They will appreciate full sun
You can plant in containers as well as open soil
Enrich the soil the autumn before
don't plant where you have planted brassicas the last three years
Sowing
Kohlrabi have a tendency to bolt if planted while the soil is too cold
If you want to get an early start then sow in modules inside in march
Sow individual seeds in soil 1cm deep
In spring when plants have germinated, plant in rows 20cm apart and each row 25cm apart
Water regularly and protect with fleece if it is cold during autumn
It is fast growing so sow a batch every three weeks
Harvest
They are best to eat around the size of a ping pong ball
If they get bigger than a tennis ball they can be tough
The leaves are also tasty as cooked greens
Traditionally greens are sown in spring as summer crops and purple sown in summer for autumn crops
